You can log into both Google and Yahoo and add you web site, then the other thing to do is create a site-map and/or submit the site map that your blog software generated.  Google has pretty good instructions on how to do this and what format it should be in.  Finally, keep the information on your site fresh, and constantly add new posts, a static web site will hurt your rankings.  Also, if your site is with a bad host and is down frequently, that can also hurt your ranking.  This is just a start - SEO is really an art form with a lot of trial and error (nobody can guarantee a top spot on a Search).
