Google put a lot of effort into stopping trick working at increasing page rank. The following work – and are not tricks:
1) Answer questions in news-groups and emails lists, proper helpful answers. Put your site’s url in the signature. NO NOT SPAM!
2) Content Content Content. The more high quality content you get the more likely people will mention your site and thus you’ll get more links to it. Also, google-bot is able to guess the difference between word spamming a page and quality.
3) Use semantic web techniques. If it is a title, put it in <h?> tags (h1,h2,h3). Make titles informative – <h1>Introduction</h1> is no use, try <h1>Introduction To Duck Farming</h1> – if you farm ducks that is. Do not try and trick google bot by making hidden text (display: none) or fancy javascript stuff, and definitely do not make text only appear on a page via javascript or the google-bot will not see it.
4) Try looking at your pages using a text only browser (elinks for example) this will help you see how the google-bot sees you page. If it makes no sense to you in elinks – then the chances are it will make no sense to the search engines.
5) No not use paid link referral – you might get de-listed.
6) Check out google’s web master tools. These will let you see if google is having any trouble indexing your site and how it sees your site. http://www.google.com/webmasters/
And that is about it. Of all the above, content is the key!
