   You probably already knew this, but just in case you didn’t. You can also increase your page rank by using good semantic XHTML how it was meant to be found. If you are using presentational mark-up that might bog your page down. This is a simple step to getting a good ranking, but if you’ve already made your web page in Browser War era HTML 3 extended with font tags, table layouts and proprietary elements, it might be a lot harder.

   The theory is that meaningless mark-up (like bold, class-less italics, underlining, font face/colour/size and putting things where they don’t belong as in tables) makes it harder to find important tags like headings, emphasised text, coding and the like. It makes sense, a search engine is essentially a computer, which reads your HTML code. So separating style from content is a major advantage to getting them to like your page.

   I’m not much into Search Engine Optimization, but using semantic and strict HTML has many other advantages, accessibility, typically slimmer and simpler code, easier to edit and it looks great on older browsers.
