Looking for good advice, and possibly website/article links about improving my search engine placement and page ranks. I’ve already got descriptive meta tags on all my pages, descriptive alt tags on my images, clean code, and a good site map with text links to all pages on the site.
Anything more I can do? Anyone have some great tomes of knowledge regarding the subject that they could link to?
Here is what we did (it worked better on Yahoo):
1. Metatags, keywords on every page.
2. Good content
3. sitemap
4. Verification by Yahoo and HTML (use of search engine provided files placed on your site…)
5. Search for "submit your web site for free" and go at it.
6. SEO submission
7. Place free ads/classifides/directory entry on free sites
8. Create other similar sites (preferrably free) and have them point to your site, mention your site
9. Include your web site in various sites (craigslist, linkedin…)
….

Well, sounds like you have done all your on page optimization. Are you sure you picked the right keywords to optimize?
Many people miss this and they optimize thier pages for the wrong keywords, they pick ones where there is 2,000,000 million results for …Find the ones that are targeted to what you are offering but do not have too many listings for…this is VERY important.
Here is a very good free tool to check that
http://www.297dollarebooks.com/research.php
Put in your target keyword and look for words related that have fewer results..this will be the 2nd set of numbers.. The first number is the number of searches done monthly…Target those that have less results but still some decent searches…
Start a Blog like yesterday…Post to it every day for 2 weeks, twice a day…then post everyday for the rest of your online life
. Make each post about a specific word you found above in your research. Only target one keyword per page…or post…
Learn about RSS…Learn about how to capture emails…start a newsletter too…give away something valuable in return for thier email address
Write an 2 articles a day for the next 6 months and submit them to ezinearticles.com and to goarticles.com — submit them by hand, do not use any automated software to do this… YOu shoul be able to write 2 articles in an hour. This will get you backlinks to your site…people will pick up your article and put it on thier sites giving you backlinks…this is extremely important…
All of this is free to do…It takes work, but thats what it takes…
Ok…whew…That is the nuts and bolts of it…

Obtaining a good Page Rank starts with having good content on your site. If you have interesting and really useful content, then people will find you thru Google search.
Page Rank depends on quality links from other sites. You can ask these sites to link to you and most will IF your site is all I mentioned above. A quality link tells Google that your site must be pretty good for an already reputable site (one with a high Page Rank) to want to link to you. With enough quality links [useless reciprocal links will even lower your Page Rank, so avoid any dubious scheme], your Page Rank will slowly but steadily grow.
One thing Google, Yahoo! and all other search engines hate is when a site tries to inflate its importance by using schemes. They will penalize sites they catch doing illegal stuff.
Try to keep away from these and work hard on your site to simply make it rich in useful content. Make it a place with fresh news everyday (that’s why search engines love blogs) and give your readers something worth visiting on a daily basis.
The link below will help you write keyword rich content.

Build inbound links to your website.
Most of the better directories online charge a one time fee to review your site and add it to their index. Here are three of my favorites:

The more inbound links to your site, the better you will rank
with Yahoo / Google / MSN.
If your site is very new, give it a little time.

One of the other posters said the below, but I will mention one other thing as well that may not have been mentioned [but also may have...I didn't have time to read them all].
When you post in most forums, you have the option of including a signature to your posts. You may want to think about adding your link(s) into those signatures in forums you frequent. That helps – and it’ll bring traffic to the site, as well.
