By this I mean is it possible to plot the progress of search engine optimisation as you try to improve your websites ranking? ie. one day it will be 200,000th and the next 120,000th so you have improved its ranking.
Hope this makes sense.
There are a range of free tools – but none of them go to the depth that you mention – infact in google mos searches are stopped after 990 pages.
however the link below is a simple free tool from a reputable SEO company that can track position movements in the top 100 keywords.

Alexa tracks website traffic not rankings like you are after.
The hardest way to do this is to run it manually and search for you site in each of the search engines and keep track of it manually.
There are a number of websites that provide free search engine ranking tools that you could find via Google, however this still includes some manually work by noting down all your rankings on a word or excel document.
My clients find my Search Engine Ranking report perfect for this exact need.
I provide a Search Engine Ranking report service where I can supply a report on an ad-hoc basis or monthly basis that keeps track of all your rankings across your chosen search engines and keywords.
My clients find this service very useful for keeping track of all their rankings which each monthly report shows all the movements of all your keywords across all the search engines.
It helps them to see which keywords are dropping or increasing in rank and where they need to focus their SEO efforts.

Yes – search!
To optimise your site for search, you need to know what search terms (/phrases) you are optimising for. So each day, search on the main engines for each of those terms, and see where you are in the results list. Bear in mind that there can be a delay from when you make the change to the search engine spider updating the search index, so may not flow through immediately.
