You can also simply ask them to link to your site if they have one of their own. One of the worst mistakes you could make is to use something like Blastomatic to place a free ad on another site. I once did this, got bombed with over 100 emails per day of junk, and actually lost ranking do to the irrelevancy of those link backs created by the ads.
