Backlinks should really be called in-pointing links. They are links from other peoples’ websites to yours.

They are very good.

They drive you free traffic.

Google uses backlinks to determine whether your site is an authority or not.

The more links you have, the higher your Google ‘Page Rank’ (PR).

Also, the more links you have from high PR sites, the better.

You get instant backlinks when you,

1) Register with directories,

2) Submit articles for publication,

3) Post on forums,

4) Put pictures or videos on youtube and myspace,

5) Are socially bookmarked, and

6) When you write a Blog.

Getting backlinks other ways, i.e. when people genuinely believe your site is great and put a link to your site on theirs, takes time.

In a nutshell, you definitely need backlinks if you want the search engines to take you seriously, particularly Google.

A backlink is a link from someone else’s web site to yours.

Many search engines judge the authority of a site (how important it is) by the number of quality backlinks.

The higher the authority, the earlier you appear in search results for your terms.

Backlinks can be organic (people really think you have something of value) or artificial (you’ve agreed to, or paid, to have people have links on their sites to yours).
