Anyone know of ways to improve a website’s ranking from major search engines? I know in the past people used to stuff all sorts of keywords into the headers, and there are services which charge to improve ranking but I’m pretty sure they are mostly scams. Anything useful to do, besides advertise the site?

The best advice I can give you is to create original content rich pages and stay away from black hat SEO techniques it will get you banned from search engines.

Make sure you specify an accurate title in the TITLE tag (and use some of your targeted keywords near the beginning of your title)

Specify some keywords in the KEYWORDS META tag. Although it is not really used for ranking, it is used by search engines to confirm the contents of the page

And use the DESCRIPTION meta tag to give a short description of the page.

Do not use javascript for important links, do not participate in linking schemes or link farms, do not duplicate content on your site. Do not make the colour of your text the same as your background. Stay away from flash and excessive use of images.

There are many other do’s and don’ts so the bottom line is, create your pages with useful original content with the users of the content in mind. If you do that and supply the Internet community with helpful information you will rank high on the search engines because you are giving people what they are looking for.

I have been adding links to a website from other websites I own.. Problem is they are all page rank of three and I have heard this doesn’t help…Is this true and does it pay to buy backlinks?

The problem your site may have is that it’s a subdomain.

For your site to be recognised by major search engines i.e. Google, you will need a designated domain. Have you thought of doing this? There are really inexpensive hosting companies out there, I particularly like nearlyfreespeech.net, they offer a pay per bandwidth option which is really cheap.

Once you have a registered domain it’s just a matter of transferring all your articles from your present subdomain to new domain.

You want to look into Search Engine Optimization tactics. I suggest you read up on it (you can find tons of articles and blogs about this online) but there are main things that are easy to do that can help.

-Use your meta tags, or keywords in your content management system. crawlers look for these when looking for relevance and ranking.

-Make sure the TITLES and FIRST PARAGRAPHS of text have the text you think people are searching for.

-If you want to get strategic about what words to use in your keywords or meta tags, look at your top 5 competitors websites and see what their meta tags are. You can do this at times by viewing the source [view --> source on your toolbar] or by testing the searches out yourself in google.

-contact yahoo for advice. I have worked on new media marketing strategy on a yahoo site before and they have been helpful to me.

So simply answer any questions that you’re knowledgeable(your niche market) at and put a link to your websites as extra source for others.

I would like to know if a site created in multiply.com with a link to a website is counted as back links by search engines?

A link is a link is a link.
However, a link on a page with more than 30 links is not very good at all.

A link on a page that has nothing about what you do is not that good.
Most authority sites have no follows these days as well. Not a bad thing as it still shows up, but it will keep you from getting crawled from site to site.

im trying to improve my site ranking. i’ve notice other website put " | " (the pipe symbol) in their website title to break it up rather than using commas or dashes. does this have any effect on search engine ranking?

It depends. Search engines tell you not to use that charter. If used correctly that method can help. Use it incorrectly and it will have a negative impact.
